No need to format the card at each update. When you install the new software the previous software will remain on the card. It can be used as well. This comes in handy in case errors exist in the new load.

Thanks Coyote. If all new updates are in cf card why i can not see it in the smartbox. i think there is a procedure that is missing. How many update for car make are you allow to have in scanner at the same time. Thanks guys.

Are you installing the software with the 7.2 install tools program? Remember, you can't save to the card or delete from the card. You should install or uninstall with the X431 serial update tool.

Hey coyote,

I've always been told by tech support that you must re-format the CF/MicroSD card everytime you update your scan tool even if you are only adding one car line.  Recently, Ray from service suggested that I format twice before updating software.

I keep all software in one file folder and select all when updating.

Anyone, Mr. Goodwrench, etc., want to chim in and let me know if I am following the correct procedure?

The only time it can possibly be a problem is if the display program has changed, you have a corrupted download, or you have installed with an older version of install tools. One of the reasons for having a customer format a card is not knowing what has been done previously. This will keep tech support from fighting an existing corruption error.

I used to do the same with tech support calls. If you are trying to correct a problem then it is advisable to format and start from the beginning. To format the card every time you update a carline would shortly lead to cutting your wrist. (LOL)

This is the rule I go by, unless the display has changed, which is rare, I just leave the old versions on there and just add the newest versions.

But if something is funky, and I doubt the quality of the download, I'll go ahead and reformat the entire card. I usually keep previous versions that I downloaded on the PC so I don't have to re-download everything.

Hope that helps!

Mr. G

If I may ride this coat tail? I've been noticing that I'm running out of space on my card. This would be do too leaving the older version of updates on the card. Will I run into an issue? should I be re-formatting and how do I do that?

Thanks,
Foley1

You should begin deleting older versions you don't need.  I think its a good idea not to exceed 90-95% of your card's storage capacity.

If you need to remove old versions and/or if you are updating with a new display version (16.50) is the latest, then you will need to format the CF card first and then do a complete update with all of the files you want on your scan tool.

Will the system walk me through how to format or can someone help me with that. I'll be honest, I haven't tried yet.

Thanks

The system won't walk you through.  There is a video tutorial on the Launch website, under support, but even that doesn't cover everything.

You need to make sure all of your files are downloaded to one folder first.

To format, go to 'computer' or 'my computer' and find the 'removable disk' for your CF card.  Once you establish the correct 'removable disk drive', right-click on the drive and about half way down will be an option to 'format'.  Don't check the 'quick format' box.  It isn't a bad idea to format the card twice before you run the update application.

When in doubt you can always call Launch product support.

When you are in the option for formatting on the Diagun, and you have the TF card installed, you have the option to format the device OR the flash card. Before the format begins, after clicking start, a window notification appears indicating that it will erase either the Diagun, or the flash card COMPLETELY, depending on which one you chose prior.

Windows CE platforms come standard with this option, and you should try to format by removing the flash card first and connecting to the PC with the reader.
