Subject: Throttle Adaption and Software programing: Apples and Apples? Mon Dec 28, 2009 10:30 pm
I may have to put a new throttle module on Volvo and noticed the Launch Volvo software now supports Throttle Adaption under the SPECIAL FUNCTION menu. I am wondering if anyone has ever used this when refitting a new ETM or will the new ETM need software programmed into it to "marry it t the car"?

Volvo software is able to code modules so that the vehicle recognizes and accepts the replacement. If you are replacing with a new module from the dealer, there will be no problem depending on the year/model of the Volvo.
If you are planning to use a used module we will not be able to code it because it will need to be programmed/flashed, which you cannot do with LAUNCH tools.
Check the sticker on the timing belt cover to see what engine type you are working with, then search our Vehicle Coverage for Volvo to see if throttle adaptations has been added. I skimmed through and saw it available for B5254T2 and B6294T engines, of the S60 and S80 models. This is offered for vehicles roughly between 2002 and 2006.
Hopefully you will not confuse "reset adaptations" with "adapting the throttle"...but for other readers out there that need clarification: "reset adaptations" SHOULD NEVER BE PERFORMED UNLESS YOU ARE PREPARED TO HAVE THE MODULE FLASHED!

Thanks so much for the clarification, it helps me to know how to proceed.
One follow up Question on the "reset adaptions" issue you brought up, does the same caution about not using reset adaption unless you are planning to program the module hold true when using the "Clear Adaption" option in the transmission controller. I know on BMW and Mercedes, clearing adaption is a regular type procedure we do after a transmission flush and a subsequent test drive causes the tranny computer to "re-learn" and optimize shift points.
Sooo...should I use this feature in the Trans. menu OR stay away from this?
