I had to bang my head against a wall for awhile but here's the scoop.
MB S600 (2001 & 2002) is a 220 chassis family. Technically, the car I was trying to communicate with is a 220.178 chassis. However, the scan tool will not communicate with that chassis number selection. I had to select an alternate S600 LL chassis with the designation of 220.878. I found this on the second page of chassis selections.
Oddly enough, Mercedes doesn't even show this 220.878 as a valid chassis code. That number doesn't exist. I looked on the star-tek website. MB's website only shows the 220.178.
I'm hoping we can get some clarity as there is no reason why Launch should have different chassis numbers than MB.
Moral of the story....when you can't communicate with Mercedes Benz try different chassis number selections. Chances are good you will eventually hit the right one.

Ok...kinda of sad responding to my own post but the latest Benz update (08-11-10) has the following:
Benz Diagnostic Program for X-431 Product Family V42.10 Compared with the previous version, the access problems on some systems of S600, CL600, S600LL, CL600_216, and S600_221 models have been revised.
