E38 service reset via scan tool

Anyone having weird results trying to reset service indicators with the Launch scan tool on chassis such as E38/E39/E46 where you go through body/instrument cluster/service reset?  The only way I could get a 2001 7 series (E38) to actually turn off the service reminder light was by changing the time & distance to next service rather than the actual oil reset.  If thats the way it should be done via the scan tool, I'm sure others would like to know.

Anyone?

I'm testing my memory here, but isn't the service reminder light an indicator of the maintence, therefore what you did via the time/mileage would be correct?

Here is a OEM looking procedure, and even through the dash you're given the option as oil OR inspection w/reset:
