I just sent my Diagun in for repairs. The smart box failed. I don't want to have it fail again anytime soon. My question is, does anyone have any recommendations on protecting the smart box from possible damage. I'm thinking an extension cable with an in-line fuse. I don't use my Diagun on sketchy looking vehicles if I can help it, but why can't Launch make a protected/fused unit similar to the VAG.COM tools. It seems like an inexpensive precaution for such an expensive item to repair. Does anyone make a protected/fused OBD 2 cable? I'd hate to retire this scantool with a hardier unit for such a trivial issue.
so why did it fail? did you drop it? I don't see how plugging it into an OBDII connector would short it out unless some before you played around with the wiring at the connector
Tech support said it was possibly damaged by using it while a battery charger was connected to a vehicle or possible short in the vehicles data link connector or wiring. I never drop it, and it stays in my pocket when I go from vehicle to vehicle. It probably failed due to age, it is my primary scan tool after all and I use it continuously throughout the day. I also have a data link connector tester that I use on VW/Audi vehicles to make sure the K-line isn't shorted, which can damage most scan tools.
Sometimes the smartboxes just fail. It is the most complex piece of the scan tool. I think the Diaguns are very reliable all things considered. Probably just bad luck.
